WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO US
CULTURE
We place great value on the culture, beliefs and backgrounds of all families enrolled within West Coast FDCS. We incorporate Indigenous perspectives into our educational programs to give children a rich, multi-dimensional view of their world, communities and environment. We include aspects of each child’s culture into our programs to ensure they are culturally appropriate, providing children with a rich, multicultural education. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and educators’ views, knowledge, and culture are highly respected and valued. They are paramount to understanding contemporary issues and are fundamental to Australian society achieving real progress and reconciliation.
RELATIONSHIPS
Strong, confident, & comfortable connections between educators & children are vital to a child’s emotional wellbeing. Whatever the age of the child in care, having nurturing & responsive relationships provide children with a sense of safety & security while at the same time giving them the confidence to act autonomously to pursue their interests. Children who feel safe & secure in the presence of familiar, nurturing people within their families & community learn to develop & foster the same type of relationships. Family daycare’s small group setting encourages genuine, trusting & long-lasting relationships. These relationships promote the development of confidence and self-worth and foster a sense of belonging, being and becoming.
COMMUNITY
We consider each child a member of the not only the West Coast Family Day Care Community but also the broader community around them. Being linked to the local community helps shape the child, developing an understanding of their background while accepting the diverse world in which we live. Community plays a vital role in developing children’s feelings of belonging & security. Children thrive in an environment of mutually supportive and caring relationships. For this reason, a service and care environment with a sense of community is crucial. Our Service is a valuable extension of each family, and we embrace the gifts, differences and individuality that families bring to our learning community.
MINDFULNESS
We encourage all educators to be mindful in their daily practices with children. By being present & in the moment, educators become mindful of how they engage, interact, & respond to children. Creating opportunities to be present takes planning & practice. One of the best ways educators can embed mindful moments in their daily curriculum is to document short sessions throughout the day in their program. The benefits are that when educators are calm, this flows onto the children & creates a consciously calm & thoughtful way of approaching practice. There is growing evidence that mindfulness improves emotional regulation skills & allows us to better model & scaffold a state of calmness, particularly in times of distress for children.
SUSTAINABILITY
We believe that sustainability is vital and comes about through transformative change at every level; our thinking, ways of being, and ways of interacting with and caring for our environment. Our educators readily engage children in the tangible methods of implementing sustainability, such as using compost bins, recycling, using recycled materials & growing produce within the FDC garden. Implementing transformative & measurable change requires critical reflection & thinking by children & educators alike, which results in environmentally aware critical thinkers emerging from childcare. To successfully ensure a sustainable future for every child & future generations, we must involve them in designing & implementing solutions.
PLAY
For children, ‘Play’ is a voluntary, enjoyable activity with no purpose or end goal. Open-ended experiences lay the foundation for a child to become a curious and excited learner. Through play, children show their remarkable ability for exploration, imagination, & decision-making. While ‘play’ is often described as ‘children’s work’, it is intensely enjoyable for them. When you remove boundaries and the pressure of needing to complete something, kids can let their minds run free without the fear of failing. They can safely explore an object, nature or persona, enabling them to draw conclusions, form opinions & build confidence. Open-ended play helps children understand the world around them and encourages them to develop a sense of self.
